‘PAULA REGO AND HER CONTEMPORARIES’ – July 2021
12 Star Gallery, London
In commemoration of the Portuguese Presidency of the EU, Paula Rego contributed eleven prints to be exhibited alongside the selected works, inviting us to look back at the past from an evolutionary perspective, and establishing a dialogue with the selected artists – Ana Palma and Cliff Andrade.
As part of this exhibition, an etching entitled ‘La Mano Muerta’, which was published by Rego in 2020 from a plate drawn in 1962/4, will be shown publicly for the first time. This exhibition was organised by the Embassy of Portugal in London and it was curated by Mara Alves.

ABOUT THE LAST SOLO EXHIBITION ‘FEMINA’
FEMINA is a personal journey to understand the idea of femininity. Natural elements, women, and poetry merge together to create images that tell stories about sweetness, bitterness, fragility, and endurance. What makes a woman a woman? What does it mean to be a woman in the 21st century? What role does the past play in how women see themselves and are seen today?
In this body of work, Ana explores how magical the process of creating or finding an image is. Letting her intuition lead the way she allows ideas to start revealing themselves through lines and brushstrokes while she digs into the depths of two-dimensionality to uncover skin, flesh, and bones.
